The Congregation of the Sisters of Destitute (SD) was founded at St. Joseph’s Mount, Chunangamvely, Aluva, Kerala, India on March 19, 1927.  St. Vincent Province of SD congregation in Kothamangalam established a registered charitable society, called Sahayagiri Health Care Society. Sahayagiri Health care society is a Non-Government Organisation which registered in 1994, under Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies registration Act, 1955. Its administrative office functioned at Thodupuzha, Idukki District, Kerala and registered office at Marayoor, Idukki district, Thodupuzha.  The organisation owns all the legal formalities such as FCRA, 12A, 80G etc for the effective functioning. Since from the past 22 years, Sahayagiri Healthcare Society had been working for community development activities among the Tribes, Youth, Differently abled, Elderly, Children and Marginal farmers. As per the Memorandum of the Sahayagiri, its area of operation all over India, but from the starting of the agency, its activities mainly concentrated in Kerala state. Due to the limitations of resources we can’t extent our activities to other states.

 

A group of passionate volunteers had started initial work at community level, the place called Marayoor, the adjacent part of Tamilnadu and boundary of Kerala state in Idukki District. This group of Volunteers initiated to visit the tribal hamlets and gave awareness about the health and hygiene, need of education, pre and post natal care etc. As part of this community development initiatives we are now directly worked in ten Tribal settlements named Thayannam, Eruttala, Alampetty, Vellakallu, Echampetty, Karpoorakudi, Churakkula, Cheruvadu, Kumattamkudy, Puthikkudy, Dindikombu. These remote places have been got an opportunity for free medical camps and caring support.  

For ensuring the holistic empowerment of tribes Society had initiated different levels of programmes among them like SHG formation, Community Based Rehabilitation, Income Generating Programmes, Education Support to the Children, Women empowerment Programmes and Children and Youth clubs etc. The main partners of this programme were CEVA, Kinder Mission Werk, Germany, Conrad N. Hilton Fund for Sisters USA, and CHAI INDIA, Central Social Welfare Board, St. Vincent Province and other local initiatives.
